History

This breed originates from Georgia, USA and is still very rare and almost extinct today (about 120-150 left). The breeding of the Alapaha started in the 1800s by the Lane family because they wanted to get back the original "plantation dog". Their bloodline has always been debated as there aren't many records, but the English bulldog and other mastiff type dogs have been mentioned.

Characteristics

The Alapaha Blue Bulldog has a broad and a classic bulldog shape. They have a short prominent muzzle, drop down ears and set apart eyes. The body is muscular and strong and the legs are straight with cat like feet. Their coat is thick, short and stiff and comes in a range of colours: brown and blue merle or red merle edged in white or chocolate & white. They have a long narrowed tail and when in motion is parallel with the ground.

Temperament

This breed is a great companion and family dog, they're brilliant with children and are very protective over them. They have a lot of guts and are only aggressive when they're defending. They're energetic, powerful and are disagreeable around other dogs. They need to feel part of the family and will bond very closely with all family members.

Care

As they only have a short coat they don't need excessive grooming. Brushing them occasionally will help shedding and get rid of dead hair. Bathing them every two weeks is also required to get rid of any smell. Check their ears for any infections, and nails if they get too long and need to be clipped. They're average shedders. As they're athletic they need lots of exercise and long daily walks are a must. However they can self-exercise in a large fenced off area. They can develop entropion and deafness due to a small genetic pool. For more detailed info, take a look at the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog Grooming page.

Training

The Alapaha Blue Blood is easy to train as they're clever and keen. Because of them being protective, obedience training is a definite and socialisation needs to be started early on with introduction to other dogs and people. Training should be conducted in an aggressive way, positive rewards and praise will work best with this breed.
