History
The Alaskan Klee Kai is a relatively new breed which came about in the 1970s. Their bloodline consists of Siberian and Alaskan husky and a small quantity of American Eskimo. They've been available to the public since 1988 and are still very rare today. They were called the Klee Kai but the name changed in 1995. They were developed by Linda Spurlin in Wasilla, Alaska.
Characteristics
This breed is a miniature version of the Husky, possessing pointed ears, muzzle and a tail that's thick and curled which normally twists over their back. Their either soft or harsh coats come in a range of colours: Black and white, grey and white and the rare red and white. Their eyes can come in any colour or colour combination, and also come in different shapes, oval, round and almond.
Temperament
They are good watchdogs but not guard dogs as they were bred as companions only. They're very energetic, friendly and loving, but can be reserved with strangers. Some individuals of this breed can bark and are actually called "talkers", but they have gentle vocalizations in general.
Care
They'll shed heavily twice a year but are minimal shedders otherwise. They need to be brushed regularly and bathed only when needed. Check their eyes and ears for any infection or debris. Long daily walks are needed, and playing games will also be loved by them. Although they're a very healthy breed they could develop FVII, a bleeding disorder. Training
Socialisation is the most important thing in training as these dogs may be scared of people and other dogs. Obedience training is recommended as they're clever and independent thinkers. They are sensitive so punishment or harsh training won't work well. They have a short attention span when they're young so try keeping their attention in training sessions.
