History

The American Bulldogs derive from the English Bulldog and were nearly extinct after the Second World War. A man named John D Johnson decided to bring back this breed and started to carefully breed this dog with the help of some other breeders. Now they're secure from extinction and are kept all over the world as companions or working dogs, often used to drive cattle as well as compete in dog sports.

Characteristics

American Bulldogs are very muscular and sturdy. There are two types of American Bulldog, the Johnson version is larger in size and has a shorter muzzle compared to the Scott version. Both versions have strong jaws and a short coat that comes in a range of colours: Combinations of solid colour and/or some parts white - All shades or tan, brown, red, or brindle. Their eyes come in any colour although if the dog is white it should have black rims.

Temperament

This breed is not overly aggressive with other dogs and should not be hostile with people in most cases. They're normally good with children but should still be watched whilst around them. They are very brave and established; they'll defend and help their master when it's needed. They're generally a friendly and happy breed. Their energy level is high and should be watched while around small animals/pets as they have a high prey drive also.

Care

Their short coat is easy to look after but will only need regular brushing but only bath when necessary. They shed frequently and may not be good around allergy suffers. You'll need to cut their nails once a week, check their ears and eyes for any irritation or infection. Walking daily is a must, they also love to play with their families and need a big yard/garden. They do tend to drool. They are a pretty healthy breed yet can develop hip dysplasia, heart Murmurs elbow dysplasia, Entropion, Degenerative Joint Disease and bilateral and unilateral deafness. Training

Obedience training is recommended and socialization is a must as they're very protective by nature (you need to start this at an early age). Rough, harsh training methods don't work well with this breed. Firm and fair training will work better but remember to be patient. They can be hard to train and owners who don't have the time to give mustn't purchase this breed. Housebreaking must start at an early age as it can lead to problems later on, routine will work wonders for the American Bulldog.
