This breed of dogs was used during the 17th century to seek out Indians, and they are direct descendants of English and French hounds. In later years, the American foxhound was highly regarded for its talent to hunt wild animals. These dogs were a popular breed, especially with the wealthy that enjoyed fox hunting. They were also a favourite of George Washington.

Characteristics

American foxhounds are a very sleek and athletic type breed of dogs. They possess a lot of strength, and are also keen hunters that are known as scent dogs. They are active hunting dogs that will follow any smell, regardless of any instructions. American foxhounds are tolerant, lively and social dogs.

Temperament

American Foxhounds are dogs that have a very good natured character, and they are great companions and pets in most cases. These dogs are also very energetic, and are affectionate and devoted companions that get on very well with children. American foxhounds love to explore different territories, and owners should be aware of this and make sure they are not let of their leashes in unsecured areas. These dogs adore being around other dogs and people, and can also be very protective. Some American foxhounds may be friendlier around strangers, and some may be more reserved. These dogs may also chase smaller animals if they get the chance.

Care

American Foxhounds do shed, but they are not very high shedders. Their grooming requirements are also not very high. The coats of American foxhounds should be brushed around once a week. While this is done, their ear canals should also be checked to see if they are clean and dry. Their short and hard coats can also be wiped with a moist cloth from time to time, to make sure it stays sleek and in a good condition. In general, American foxhounds are relatively healthy dogs. They do have a tendency to gain weight if they are overfed though. For more detailed info, take a look at the American Foxhound Grooming page.
