History

Not everyone agrees on the origins of the American Staffordshire terrier. Many feel that the American Staffordshire terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier is one and the same breed. These two dogs are documented by different registries as dissimilar breeds, although they are considered the same breed. When they are bred, they are bred to have the same qualities and the same build. These dogs come from the United States, and were developed as a product of breeding terriers and bulldogs.

Characteristics

American Staffordshire terriers have reserved an unworthy reputation for many years, especially because they are used in the so-called "sport" of dog fighting. These dogs are however very loyal, tender and affectionate. They make wonderful companions, and it is important that their owners are dominant and experienced. Because they are protective of their territory, homes and families - they make excellent watchdogs.

Temperament

American Staffordshire terriers are usually laid back, relaxed and confident. Much of their appetites form destruction and hostility can be ascribed to poor breeding. These dogs have a good temperament and they are easy going, although it's recommended that their owners have some experience of dog ownership. American Staffordshire terriers will get along well with children that are older and more considerate. It is always good to keep in mind the fact that they were bred to be aggressive towards other dogs, and should always be supervised when with other dogs or children. These dogs also tend to be hostile toward other pets, such as cats, rabbits, and rodents.

Care

These dogs do shed some hair, but they are not heavy shedders at all. It I fairly easy to look after their glossy coats - and they only need to be brushed occasionally. If you rub their coats down with a moist cloth once in a while, it will help to keep the coat looking clean and glossy. Bathing or dry shampooing should only be applied when it is really needed. Training

Some American Staffordshire terriers can be very friendly and affectionate toward strangers, while others can come across more reserved and defensive. These dogs are very trusting and good-natured, but they can be quite stubborn and confident in some cases. Their owners should be assertive, yet display a positive attitude toward them. This should get a positive response from them. These dogs can be very strong-minded and tough, but they are also very clever and loyal.
