History
The American Water Spaniel is one of the first breeds originating in North America and is still rarely seen outside of the United States. Bred in the Midwestern U.S. for hunting and farm work, it first appeared sometime during the 18th century, although specifics regarding its origin are unknown. This spaniel is a wonderful, all-around hunting dog that thrives in the water. The American Water Spaniel has no problem staying afloat, even in rocky waters. This breed is the state of dog of Wisconsin. Despite its home grown origins, the American Water Spaniel remains a rare breed even in the United States.
Characteristics
The American Water Spaniel is a chocolate, curly-coated dog with long, wavy ears and a solid, medium-sized build. Bred for hunting and field work, this breed is active, sturdy and willing to please. As might be expected by its name, this dog is also an avid swimmer.
Temperament
The American Water Spaniel is an easy-going, loving family member with a gentle disposition. Bred as a hunter, this dog is highly intelligent and loves to work. The American Water Spaniel has a sensitive side, so care should be taken to treat this breed with gentle respect. This happy, eager to please spaniel is usually good with children. Like most sporting breeds, the American Water Spaniel adores being the center of attention.
Care
The American Water Spaniel sports a curly or wavy coat with a protective undercoat. The chocolate or liver-colored coat possesses protective natural oils which should be preserved. Therefore, the American Water Spaniel should only be bathed when necessary. Some specimens of the breed can develop skin problems, which can be minimized by the protection of the dog's natural oils. This dog sheds a minimal amount, but the oily coat sometimes has a distinct odor. For more detailed info, take a look at the American Water Spaniel Grooming page.
Training
The American Water Spaniel is a very sensitive dog that does best with positive, gentle training methods. The use of a heavy hand with this breed will result in timidity and, oftentimes, defensive snapping. This spaniel is very willing to learn and will do well with calm, persistent, kind training methods. Due to its sensitive, and sometimes shy, nature, the American Water Spaniel should be properly socialized as a pup to avoid any potential timidity or aggressiveness toward other dogs. This breed usually does well around non-canine family pets. Since it was originally bred for field word, the American Water Spaniel is an active dog with lots of stamina. Long, daily walks will go a long way to combat excess energy and ensure a happy indoor dog.
