History

For over 3,000 years the Anatolian Shepherd Dog has been faithfully guarding flocks and acting as a companion to shepherds in the Middle East. The harsh weather conditions of the Anatolian Plateau are no match for this rugged breed, which lives outside year-round when carrying out its duties. This is not a herding breed, but rather a guard dog for livestock. Anatolian Shepherd Dogs moved beyond the Middle East in the mid-20th century. The breed has a small, but loyal following in other parts of the world.

Characteristics

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a very large, noble and impressive breed. This is a dog bred for a single, utilitarian purpose and therefore, can be somewhat unreliable as a companion without proper socialization and obedience training. As a guard dog bred accustomed to working alone for long hours, it possesses an independent streak. The Anatolian Shepherd Dog has a large, heavy head, solid bone and muscular build. They are somewhat similar in stature to the Great Pyrenees, although more slender and sprightly.

Temperament

Fiercely loyal to his family, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog takes his position as guardian very seriously. This dog is suspicious of strangers, particularly those who venture onto his own territory. This is not an aggressive breed, however. When threatened, it prefers loud, deep barks and chasing to physical attack. The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is distinguished, serious and hard-working. Although intelligent, this dog can be independent and stubborn. It also has a desire to be dominant, so it is not a breed for the inexperienced dog owner.

Care

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog has two different coat varieties - short and rough. The short coated variety possesses a short, dense coat in solid colors ranging from cream to fawn, with a black mask and ears. The masked pattern is also seen in the rough coated variety, but with thicker, longer hair at the neck and mane. Feathering on the legs, ears and tail are also present. Both varieties have an undercoat, so be prepared for the extremely heavy seasonal shedding that typically accompanies undercoated breeds. During this time, the coat will need to be brushed frequently. Otherwise, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog coat requires very little care. Training

Natural guardians, Anatolian Shepherd Dogs are wary of strangers. Therefore, socialization is a must. This is best done in a pup's early months. Obedience training should begin as early as possible, as well, due to this dog's immense size. Firm, consistent training as a youngster will prevent an out-of-control, massive dog that runs roughshod over its master. Although brave and strong, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog is not an aggressive breed. But, its natural instinct as a guardian makes it independent and somewhat stubborn. Consistent training is a must. Fortunately, the Anatolian is a smart, loyal dog and takes to training with its trademark strong work ethic.
