History

For years rumors have swirled that the Australian Kelpie originated as a cross between a Border Collie and an Australian Wild Dingo. More reliable documentation tells a different story, revealing the true foundation stock of the Kelpie to be a particular strain of Collie hailing from Northern England. Either way, this hard-working breed has been busy herding and guarding Australian livestock since the latter half of the 19th century. Its name, "Kelpie", was first seen in the novel Kidnapped, by Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson.

Characteristics

The Australian Kelpie is compact, energetic and robust. But don't let its small size fool you. The Kelpie is more than capable of herding thousands of heads of sheep or cattle, sometimes even jumping on the backs of livestock when necessary. This dog uses the infamous "Border Collie eye" and nipping of its jaws to control its charges. Not surprisingly, the Kelpie makes an excellent watchdog for a family home. It has pricked ears and a short coat that comes in a variety of colors ranging from fawn, chocolate or blue, to black or red with tan markings.

Temperament

The Kelpie's background as a herding dog gives it boundless amounts of energy. This dog is happiest when active and working. It may be too work-oriented for the typical family home, preferring instead to live on a ranch or some other type of rural environment. As the Australian Kelpie is accustomed to acting as a guardian, it tends to be a one-person dog that bonds closely with its master. This breed is fine around children when raised with them. It does have a tendency to herd other pets, animals and even people who are not members of the family.

Care

The Kelpie's short, double coat is weather-resistant and built for long hours outdoors. Therefore, this dog should not be bathed unless necessary in order to preserve the coat's natural protective oils. The only grooming necessary for this breed is occasional brushing. Expect your Australian Kelpie to shed an average amount. Due to its extremely active nature, this dog requires long, daily walks. Training

Bred to herd and guard flocks for long hours in extreme weather conditions, the Kelpie is a workaholic at heart. He must be given a job to do to occupy his keen mind. Training goes a long way in combating boredom and providing this dog with a purpose. Give your Australian Kelpie the opportunity to participate in the obedience ring and you will not be disappointed.
