History

The Azawakh originated as a hunter and guardian for nomadic tribes in the Southern Sahara region of Africa. The foundation stock includes the group of dogs known in Africa as pariah dogs. Also known as bush dogs, the pariah dogs of sub-Saharan Africa are so similar in appearance to the Azawakh that they are nearly indistinguishable. This breed is somewhat rare in Europe and North America and only gained AKC recognition as recently as 1993 in the United States.

Characteristics

A native breed related to the Greyhound, Whippet, Saluki and other sight hounds, the Azawakh is a thin, elegant dog with very long legs. It is often described as having a calm, almost regal, presence. Unlike many sight hounds, the Azawakh sports flopped ears. The coat is extremely short and fine and may be dark fawn, light sable or fawn with a flecked pattern. White markings appear on the body in the form of a white bib on the chest and stockings on the legs. Some Azawakhs have a black mask pattern on their faces.

Temperament

This breed’s origins as a hunter and guardian make it wary of outsiders. The Azawakh is generally reserved around strangers and prefers not to be petted by people he does not know. With his owners, however, this dog is very affectionate and even-tempered. He typically forms a very close bond with his master. Despite the Azawakh’s distrust of strangers, aggression in this breed is rare. Socialization as a young pup will help the Azawakh thrive in a social environment. This is a high energy dog, but given space to run and release excess energy, makes a nice indoor companion.

Care

Due to its slight frame and near absence of body fat, the Azawakh does not do well in cold weather. During winter, trips outdoors require a coat to keep him nice and warm. The extremely short coat is easy to care for. An occasional brushing will remove excess hair and reduce shedding. Bathing is done only when necessary. Azawakhs prefer not to go outside in rainy weather. For more detailed info, take a look at the Azawakh Grooming page.

Training

Like other sight hounds, the Azawakh should never be trusted off-lead unless in an enclosed area. Sight hounds are prone to dart after the first thing that catches their attention, a habit which could result in serious injury for a family pet. The Azawakh is an independent thinker, so training is crucial. Consistent, firm, kind training will suit this breed best. Give your Azawakh the opportunity to run free in an enclosed area when possible to run off steam. This, along with regular walks on a leash, should be plenty of exercise for the typical Azawakh. Like other sight hounds, Azawakhs often enjoy the canine sport of lure coursing.
