History
The Basenji originally originates from Zaire, and was at a stage known as the Congo dog. Many people believe that these dogs may have originated from hunting dogs that was once used by the Congo pygmies. These dogs were first introduced to Europe in the mid 1930s.
Characteristics
The Basenji dogs can be a bit unfriendly toward strangers, and this makes them a very distrustful breed. This breed of dogs is very intelligent, but also independent which makes training quite a difficult task. They are very alert and playful, which makes them wonderful family pets. These dogs love the outdoors and copes best with enough land around them.
Temperament
The dogs are attentive, loving, tough, active and inquisitive. They love to play and make good pets, as long as it is handled frequently from an early age. The Basenji is also very intelligent, and they respond very well to training. They also have a very strong desire to please their families. They can be quite retained toward strangers. The Basenji dogs are a bit somewhat distant, but they can also form strong bonds with people. These dogs should not be trusted with other dogs though. They are usually tolerant, but do best with older understanding children. These dogs don't like wet weather at all. They like to chew on things, so it is important to give them lots of toys of their own. The breed likes to climb, and can quite easily make their way over fences.
Care
The grooming requirements for a these dogs are quite low, and they do not shed a lot at all. Their coats are sleek and easy to maintain. A sporadic brushing of the coat is all that is required to get rid of any lifeless hair. Training
The Basenji dogs should be socialized from an early age to prevent any destruction problems - especially if they are to be raised in a home. This is also important to make sure that they will do well around children and other animals. Obedience training is a must for these dogs, as they are very lively and a very vigilant breed of dogs. This breed should have an assortment of training methods to keep their attention - they tend to bore quite quickly. Diversity, steadiness, and positive handling work best with the Basenji dogs.
