History

The Beagle has its origin from Great Britain, and has a history that spans across many centuries. They have been around since King Henry VIII was on the throne. These dogs were once bred for hare hunting, and have become very popular in the United States in the mid-twentieth century. In the 1950s they became the most popular breeds of dogs in America.

Characteristics

The Beagle functions well in a family environment, and they are full of energy. They are wonderful companions for children given that they are socialized properly. These dogs are very lively and active. They are very alert and have a very good temperament, and should not show any signs of aggression or nervousness. Beagles can be quite naughty and very daring at times, so it is important to take proper precautions when training these dogs.

Temperament

Beagles just love everyone - they are very sweet, calm, energetic and inquisitive dogs. These dogs are excellent with children, and also generally good with other dogs. They should not be trusted with other pets though, unless they are socialized with cats and other household animals when still young. Beagles are also known to have minds of their own.

Care

It is easy to look after the short- haired coats of Beagles. They can be brushed with a firm bristle brush, and just be bathed with a mild shampoo when it is really necessary. They can also be dry shampooed occasionally. Their ears should also be checked carefully for infections, and their nails should also be trimmed. These dogs don't shed too much.

Training

Beagles are very intelligent dogs. They also like to please their families, and make wonderful students to work with. They can loose interest very quickly though, because they are bound to pick up scents and then follow. Obedience training is very handy with these dogs. If they are properly trained, these Beagles should listen. If they are not trained, listening can become quite a big problem. It is important to be consistent with these dogs, and handle them in a firm, yet gentle way. If this is done, these dogs will excel quite well.
