History
Although little known outside of its native France, the Beauceron has been shepherding the plains surrounding Paris since the mid-16th century. This dog is also called the Berger de Beauce, the Beauce Shepherd and the Bas Rouge, which means Red Stockings. Developed as a rustic herding and guard dog, the Beauceron has also been used extensively as a military working dog. It is still a favorite with the French police and military. Still relatively rare outside its home country, this breed is gradually gaining popularity in the United States and expects to gain AKC recognition in the near future.
Characteristics
The Beauceron has a short coat which comes in two distinct color patterns. The first is tan and black, which features lovely stocking markings on the legs. The other color pattern had large patches of black, gray and tan, and is called Harlequin. The Beauceron is a large, well-muscled dog, weighing around 100 pounds. Along with the Briard, the Beauceron is one of France's oldest herding breeds.
Temperament
The same traits which make the Beauceron an excellent military working dog also make this breed a vigilant guard dog for the home. While calm and patient around family, the Beauceron is also highly territorial. He must be socialized in order to get along with strange dogs and people. The Beauceron is known for its intense desire to please its master and for its strong work ethic. It is typically a one-person dog, usually forming a very close bond with one particular member of the family.
Care
The Beauceron's short coat does not require any special attention. Bathe when necessary and brush every so often to cut down on shedding. This breed sheds an average amount, but brushing can remove loose hairs and reduce the amount of dog hair in the home. Of more concern is the Beauceron's high activity level and impatience for being left alone. This is a working breed that wants nothing more to be given a task to occupy itself. Beaucerons do not do well when left alone for long periods. They need to be walked for relatively long periods of time every day to burn off excess energy. Training
The Beauceron is a dominant dog with strong guarding instincts and requires a master with a firm hand who can devote the proper amount of time to training. This breed is such a one-person dog, it will not follow commands from other family members unless specifically trained to do so. The Beauceron is also a natural herder and will herd anything that moves unless trained to refrain from this activity. This dog's aptitude for training and following its owner's commands is very strong, so with work the Beauceron can be an extremely obedient family member.
