History
Originating in Northern Italy, the memorable Bergamasco is a truly ancient breed. Its roots date back at least 2000 years, with ancestors up and down the Alpine chain. This was one of the original sheepdogs of the region. According to legend, shepherds kept the Bergamasco's bloodlines secret for years. Today, the Bergamasco is considered a rare breed.
Characteristics
The Bergamasco is a medium sized dog with quite a unique felted coat that gives the dog a rustic, wooly appearance. The flocked coat is formed naturally, as the Bergamasco's three types of hair clump together and form mats. These mats start at the spine and go all the way to the ground. The Bergamasco's eyes are shielded by a thick growth of hair on the head. The coat can be any shade of gray or silver, from very pale silver to deep charcoal. This color pattern served as a form of camouflage when the Bergamasco worked the French Alps. Throughout its rich history, the trademark looks of the Bergamasco have remained the same.
Temperament
The Bergamasco is a very intelligent breed, with a sharp mind and alert disposition. Centuries of guarding herds have given this dog a natural instinct to observe what is going on around it at all times. These qualities make the Bergamasco an excellent watchdog, although it is not an aggressive breed. To the contrary, it is a peaceful, even-tempered dog that gets along brilliantly with children. Their remarkable patience and attentiveness make them a wonderful choice for therapy dogs working with children who have special needs.
Care
The special Bergamasco coat forms naturally, with flocks beginning to mat together when the dog loses its fluffy puppy coat. Rather than fur, the Bergamasco is considered to have hair. It does not have dander like most other dog breeds and is considered to be non-allergenic. The Bergamasco's coat is constantly changing and evolving. The flocking process continues throughout its life. When the dog reaches approximately 5 years of age, the flocks will grow all the way to the ground. Multiple layers of mats will form as the dog ages. The Bergamasco only needs to be bathed a few times a year. For more detailed info, take a look at the Bergamasco Grooming page.
Training
Still firmly in touch with its working ancestry, the Bergamasco longs for a job to do. This is an active dog and will need an outlet in order to remain calm and well-behaved. This smart dog responds well to consistent, firm training done with positive methods. Give your Bergamasco plenty of opportunity to romp and play and be sure to include a long walk in its daily activities. With its natural work ethic, this breed enjoys participating in canine activities such as herding, competitive obedience and agility.
