History

The Black Mouth Cur is one of a group of cur-type dogs found in the Southern United States of America. Throughout history the spelling of the word “cur” has varied widely, with variations such as Cu, Kurre and Curre. Regardless of the spelling, a cur is a rugged dog with a variety of purposes such as hunting, guarding and herding. Though they have been around the South for years, the first Black Mouth Curs to be registered with a kennel club were done so with the National Kennel Club in 1964. Without a doubt the most famous example of this breed is the dog that played the title role in Disney’s 1957 classic film “Old Yeller.” The Black Mouth Cur in the movie was trained and coached by Frank and Rudd Weathermax, the Hollywood animal trainers who also trained the legendary Lassie.

Characteristics

This is a strong, muscular dog with a powerful muzzle. Built for hunting game of all sizes, the Black Mouth Cur can be imposing, with its well-muscled physique and trademark black muzzle. Interestingly, the Black Mouth Cur’s tail can vary from a short, bobtail or a very long pointed one. The coat also varies. Some Black Mouth Curs feature a very short coat and others, a heavier one. Coat color can be any of a variety of shades of yellow, brindle or fawn. The Black Mouth Cur’s ears are medium in length and fold over. Oftentimes, the ears are black like the muzzle.

Temperament

The Black Mouth Cur is a fearless hunter. This breed has long been prized by hunters for the way it tracks down and kills game far larger than itself. Like its portrayal in Old Yeller, the Black Mouth Cur never backs down, oftentimes taking down wild boar, raccoons, squirrels, deer, and even bear. It can also tree and bay an animal in a way similar to a coonhound. This same talented hunter is gentle, loyal and protective with its family. The Black Mouth Cur is fiercely loyal and wants nothing more than to please its master. Due to its background as a hunter, however, this breed should not be trusted around other non-canine family pets. Among its other talents, the Black Mouth Cur can also work and herd cattle.

Care

With either coat type, the Black Mouth Cur is very easy to groom. Simply bush occasionally to remove loose hairs and cut down on shedding. Bathing should be done only when necessary as skin problems could occur if the Black Mouth Cur is bathed too often. The toenails should also be clipped regularly. Training

The Black Mouth Cur is an interesting breed when it comes to training. This dog is extremely voice sensitive and will respond immediately to a correction given in the proper tone. Loyal almost to a fault, the Black Mouth Cur lives to please its master. Training will help your dog understand what you want it to do. Once the Black Mouth Cur grasps your instructions, he will fall all over himself to listen. Make no mistake, however. This breed is an extremely powerful, active hunting dog. It has energy to spare which, if left unchecked, can lead to boredom and a variety of unpleasant behavior problems. Simply walking this dog every day is not enough exercise. Black Mouth Curs love to run and make great jogging partners. Look for fun, entertaining ways to keep your Black Mouth Cur active and happy.
