History

Border terriers have its origin in Cheviot Hills which is near the border between England and Scotland. They were used to drive foxes from the dens and killed them. These dogs have enough stamina and long enough legs to keep up with a horse - even though they are relatively small dogs. Border terriers are also very good companion dogs, seeing that they are very adaptable and friendly dogs. Some of their other talents include tracking, hunting, watch dogging, competitive obedience and performing tricks.

Characteristics

This breed of dogs are very small, lively, compact and extremely energetic. The Border terrier possesses energy, endurance, and stamina. They are resilient, vigorous, and cheerful dogs. Seeing that they are members of the herding group, they are capable of independent thought and action.

Temperament

Border terriers are spirited, keen and very friendly dogs. They are also enthusiastic and good natured, possessing a lot of energy and determination. These dogs can be very laid back and sensible, but at times also be filled with lots of energy and spirit. The act that they are so curious can get them in trouble from time to time - so it is best to not let them loose unless they are in a safe environment or in enclosed garden. These dogs are very responsive and eager to please their owners - they have very high energy levels and may be best with owners that have some experience.

Care

The coats of these dogs should be brushed once a week. They can also be clipped once every few months to make sure that they look at its best. These dogs only have to be bathed when it is completely necessary. They are also low shedding dogs, and might work well with people prone to allergies. Training

Border terriers need to be socialized early on to prevent them from being shy, and also prevent disobedience - they are also eager dogs and very willing to please their owners. These dogs do not do well if harsh and heavy-handed training methods are being enforced. It is important to include enough praise, rewards, patience, respect, motivation and consistency in their training. Border terriers are also very talented when it comes to competitive obedience, tracking and agility.
