History
Boykin Spaniels are a fairly recent breed - these dogs are highly rated for their hunting abilities. They are originally from South Carolina in the United States. Boykin Spaniels are elected as the representative dog of South Carolina.
Characteristics
Boykin Spaniels are strong dogs of a medium size - they are also very well-built. The Boykin Spaniels possesses lots of suppleness, speed and stamina. Boykin Spaniels are able to work on any terrain, and in any weather conditions. The Boykin Spaniel is an excellent swimmer, and they are very capable of both retrieving in field and in water.
Temperament
The Boykin Spaniel is a very passive but enjoyable and obedient dog. They are very clever and devoted companions. They have yellow eyes that are their trademark, and they are known to stare expectantly into your eyes. Boykin Spaniels are incredible swimmers, and they really enjoy being in the water. Each of these dogs has a unique personality and a unique field ability which is not very often matched by other dogs. They also have very fine noses and they are very enthusiastic in the field. This breed has been bred to hunt, and their sense of smell might sometimes cause them to wander off when not on a lead.
Care
The coats of the Boykin Spaniel should be brushed on a regular basis in order to avoid matting. These dogs should only be bathed when it is deemed necessary, and their ears should be checked often to make sure it is clean and dry - and to avoid infection. Training
Boykin Spaniels do extremely well in planned activities and obedience classes - these dogs possesses a softer character than other Spaniel breeds. Therefore these dogs will not respond well to rough training methods. They do however do very well in motivational training, especially if it is presented in a fair and consistent way.
