Characteristics
The Briard is a rugged and lively medium sized dog. They are exclusive in appearance and have an almost human-like class. This breed is very commanding and has a commanding presence.
Temperament
Briards are farm workers by nature and lives to herd almost anything. They have an outstanding hearing ability and are basically kind. They also have a very strong protective nature. Briards make a magnificent and attentive watchdog. They are responsive, humorous and submissive dogs - but they also have a mind of their own. Because they have been working with humans for a long time, it has left them calm and sweet natured. These dogs are also courageous, trustworthy and bold. They have very good memories, and show a lot of initiative. Briards are very trainable dogs.
Care
The Briard breed is medium shedders. Their long, thick coats will need to be combed around twice a week. It may have to be done more regularly during the periods when their shedding is more heavily. For more detailed info, take a look at the Briard Grooming page.
Training
It is very important to have intense and extensive socialization beginning at an early age - it so compulsory for this breed. They require firm owners that are able to take charge. Very often these dogs end up in shelters because people don't realise they can be quite a challenge to be raised and to live with. If this breed is not raised in a proper way, they can turn out to be extremely aloof, afraid, or both. They will not respond well to harsh, unjust, or rough training. These methods will cause the dogs to become reserved and hostile. Training must be conducted with constancy, firmness, endurance, and love. They do very well at search and rescue, police training, and protection work.
