History

Brussels griffons originated from Brussels in Belgium. They used to be found hunting pests in stables. During the 1880s, the Brussels griffon was first introduced into England and America. They are famous for sporting a human-like expression. They are very cheerful dogs, and good companion dogs.

Characteristics

The Brussels griffon is a real barker, and they very much enjoy doing so. These dogs make a very good alarm dogs. They are also very clever and fussy. It is important to start with obedience classes when they are still puppies, to make sure they end up and pleasing and gracious dogs later on.

Temperament

Brussels griffons are very alert and intelligent. They are delightful toy dogs that are ideal for a companion dogs. Feisty and inquisitive, these dogs can be very humorous and entertaining when they want to be. They will also be happy to nestle up on the lap of their owner. These dogs are self-governing and can have something of a controlling streak if they are not correctly trained and managed. At the same time they are also responsive, intelligent and enjoyable to be around. The Brussels griffon gets on well with children – but is better around for them to be around older children who are more considerate. Energetic, younger children could put him in danger due to their small size.

Care

The Brussels griffon sheds very little, and they do need a lot of upholding on their coats. Daily brushing should keep the skin glossy, dirt-free and prevent any matting or tangles. Training

Owners must be very consistent in their training with this breed of dogs. They tend to loose interest quite quickly. Obedience classes are recommended for this breed, but they are not required. If owners make the training of these dogs fun, they can be sure to keep the attention of these dogs.
