History

Canaan dogs are an ancient breed of dogs. They originated in the Middle East in 2200 B.C. These dogs were used for herding and guarding by the Israelites. This breed was also used at length during and after WWII for guarding, tracking, and patrol. Today, the Canaan Dog still performs most of these duties. They were once a rare breed but they are now firmly established in Israel, Western Europe, England, and the United States.

Characteristics

The Canaan Dog is well balanced, muscular and a medium-sized dog. This graceful breed is extremely flexible and possesses stamina and resistance. They are lively, sporty and hard working dogs. They have intensely developed senses of smell and hearing which enables them to become immediately alert to danger.

Temperament

The Canaan Dog is a very loyal and loving dog. They possess lots of love and loyalty to shower upon their family. They are always looking to please their owners. These dogs are also very eager, passionate, and inventive. These clever dogs can be quite controlling and strong willed when they want to be. Therefore they are best suited to owners that have some experience of dog ownership and training. The Canaan Dog is not overly difficult when it comes to attention, and is very self-governing yet very flexible. They have a high level of intelligence which means that you need to keep them mentally stimulated through the actions that you provide - boredom can lead to negative behaviour.

Care

Canaan Dogs are very clean breeds with no doggie odour. They can also be groomed very easily. They can be combed and brushed once a week. Extra care should only be taken when these dogs are shedding. This breed of dogs is a seasonally heavy shedder. For more detailed info, take a look at the Canaan Dog Grooming page.

Training

It is very important to remember that the Canaan Dog is a primitive breed. These dogs are slow to mature, self-governing and obstinate. This breed of dogs requires a knowledgeable owner and trainer. Early socialization and compliance are an absolute must. Canaan Dogs will not respond to cruel or rough methods but does need to be shown who is dominant. Training must be done with firmness, admiration, justice, endurance and consistency. These dogs are easily bored with repetition.
