History

This breed is about 100 years old, and it is believed that the Cao da Serra de Aires has its descendance from the Briard. For the greatest part of the 21st century, the Cao da Serra de Aires has been a companion to many shepherds in the southern part of Portugal – even although they were almost extinct in the 1970s. These dogs are almost unknown outside of Portugal; they are still very classy dogs.

Characteristics

The Cao da Serra de Aires is a very brave and vibrant dog – they also possess a lot if intelligence. These dogs are very keen to work, and they are also very loyal towards their owners and families. This breed is clear-headed, very watchful and also attentive. Although they learn quite easily, they can be a bit obstinate and dominant if they are given the chance.

Temperament

The Cao da Serra de Aires is one of the most committed and intelligent sheepdogs there are. This breed is very lively, and they are also very keen to get involved with work. These dogs are very devoted to their owners and families. Their intelligence is above average, and they also learn fairly quickly. If these dogs are trained properly, they are very consistent. The Cao da Serra de Aires gets along well with other dogs if they are socialised properly from an early age onwards. These dogs can be a bit wary of strangers, but they are excellent watchdogs. This breed will also defend its family without fail.

Care

These dogs should be checked often to see if they have tangles in their coats – their coats should not be brushed too much however, otherwise it might cause damage to the texture of it. It is recommended that any excess hair between their toes should be trimmed. The Cao da Serra de Aires should not be bathed often, but only when it is deemed necessary. Training

The Cao da Serra de Aires should be trained in a very consistent and stable environment. These dogs will learn very quickly if the training is done in a proper way. This breed can however be very obstinate, and they will try to take control when they are given the opportunity. The trainers of these dogs should be experienced and dominant in order to achieve success with these dogs.
