History
Carolina Dogs have their origin from the American Deep South, and it is believed that these dogs are direct descendants of the very old pariah dogs that accompanied the Asians across the Bering Straits land bridge about 8,000 years ago. The Carolina Dog was first discovered by a DR. I. Lehr Brisbin, Jr. at the University of Georgia at the United States Department of Energy's Savannah River site, South Carolina. This area is very remote, and the public is not allowed here. Wild dogs that have been living here for hundreds of years, and didn't have opportunity to mate with domesticated dogs.
Characteristics
The Carolina Dog is a very well-built, dominant and supple dog. These dogs are resilient and they possess an attentive and intellectual expression.
Temperament
The Carolina Dog is one of the very little breeds alive today that is truly a prehistoric dog - these dogs are the result of natural choice for survival in nature, and not that of selective reproduction. Some wild specimens are still known, therefore this is not a totally domesticated dog. This dog manage to survived as a free living dog in the swamps and forests of South Carolina for thousands of years. The Caroline Dog has also proven to be highly flexible and agreeable to domestication - they are also wonderful pets for the family. Many of the Caroline dogs are very shy around people, and they are not fond of much handling unless they are socialised when still a puppy. These dogs can be wonderful companion dogs if socialisation was successful. Carolina Dogs wants to be part of a pack, and will therefore adapt well to a family framework.
Care
The coats of the Carolina Dog are fairly easy to look after, and it basically takes care of itself. It is recommended that it is brushed occasionally, and these dogs should only be bathed when it is really necessary. For more detailed info, take a look at the Carolina Dog Grooming page.
Training
It is important that the Carolina Dog has a definite leader who exhibits respect. Early and intense socialisation and obedience training is crucial for these dogs. They will not react well if training is rough. It is important that the training is conducted in a respectful, firm and fair manner.
