History
Catahoula Leopard Dogs originated from the Nordic Wolfhound, and they have been introduced three to five hundred years before the Spanish arrived. The exact area of their origin is the state of Louisiana, and in particular the area of Catahoula. The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog was chosen as the official state dog of Louisiana in 1979. During one stage, these dogs were used to herd pigs and cattle that escaped, and they lived in woods and swamps. This breed has also been used by hunters to trail raccoons, but these dogs are better of in a home than being hunters.
Characteristics
Catahoula Leopard dogs are very sporty, defensive and also supple. These dogs possess great energy and passion. Catahoula Leopard dogs are a medium to large size dog, and they are very muscular. The most exceptional feature is the prominent webbing of their paws – this gives the dogs the ability to work in swampy areas, and also a better swimming capability.
Temperament
The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog is an autonomous and very defensive dog. These dogs are very loving toward their families, but they are a bit wary toward strangers. Although the Catahoula Leopard Dog is affectionate toward his owner, they are not recommended as pets for the family who are not very interested in their dogs. For the experienced and right owner, this dog will be very protective but also very dominating. These dogs require a dominant owner that takes control.
Care
The grooming needs for these dogs are minimal since the Catahoula has a very short coat. These dogs should not be bathed excessively, and only when necessary, and they would also require brushing once during the week. The nails of these dogs should be trimmed often, and their teeth should also be kept clean. For more detailed info, take a look at the Catahoula Leopard Dog Grooming page.
Training
The Catahoula Leopard dog is a very confident, determined and dominant dog. They require a strong, dominant and actively involved owner. Early obedience training of these dogs is very important, and training should be done in a firm and fair manner, along with consistency.
