History Cavalier King Charles Spaniels originally descended from the King Charles spaniel and other small Toy Spaniels. Many of these can be seen on sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth century paintings. The breeders of these dogs were trying to reproduce a toy dog similar to those seen in portraits. In the 1920’s the American by the name of Roswell Eldridge offered prize money during a dog show in London, to any person exhibiting King Charles Spaniels with long noses. He was looking for those dogs that were similar to those appearing in Van Dyck’s paintings. By the 1940’s these dogs were classified as a separate breed of dogs, and they were given the prefix Cavalier in order to distinguish them from their descent.

This breed of dogs is a true buddy and lap dog. They are calm, but they also have a sporting character. This in return enables them to do well in agility and hunting actions. These spaniels just love to swim and they are natural retrievers.

Care

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should be combed or brushed with a firm bristle brush, and should be bathed only when it is necessary. The fine, feathered hair on their ears is prone to tangling and matting – therefore these dogs should be groomed often. It is also important to trim the hair between the pads on their feet regularly, and to make sure their ears are clean. Make sure that these dogs are warm and dry after they have been bathed. The eyes should also be checked for infections. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are average shedders. For more detailed info, take a look at the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Grooming page.
