History

Central Asian Ovtcharkas are a breed of dogs that are 4000 years old. There is not a lot known about their origin, but many agree that they may have their origin from the Tibetan Mastiff because of their nomadic life style. The Central Asian Ovtcharka can be found in areas such as Russia, Iran and Afghanistan. These dogs are seldom seen outside the Central Republic of Asia, and in Russia they are declining.

Characteristics

Central Asian Ovtcharkas are very large dogs, and they are also very fearsome in their appearance. The Central Asian Ovtcharka is well-built, powerful and brave. These dogs have a good character, they are without fear and they are also very athletic.

Temperament

Central Asian Ovtcharkas are very peaceful dogs, and without fear. They are very independent, and will stand their ground without backing down. These dogs get along well with the members of their own family, but they should however be supervised when with children. Central Asian Ovtcharkas like to bark, especially at nigh – and this might present a problem if you have neighbours close by. These dogs are not well suited to the lazy owner, as they like to work and be active.

Care

Central Asian Ovtcharkas will not require a lot of grooming, and should only be brushed occasionally. These dogs do however shed their coats a lot in the spring, and their coats should be brushed more during this time in order to remove the dead hairs. The rest of the year these dogs will not shed a lot. For more detailed info, take a look at the Central Asian Ovtcharka Grooming page.

Training

The Central Asian Ovtcharka should be trained up in socialisation from an early age onwards if they are not being used to guard flocks. These dogs are very dominant, and will therefore require experienced owners. Central Asian Ovtcharkas will not put up with rough training methods. Training should take place in a fair, patient and consistent environment.
