History
Cesky Terriers have been developed by a Czechoslovakian breeder by the name of Frantisek Horak. Cesky Terriers are a fairly new breed of dogs. These dogs are a combination of Sealyham and Scottish Terriers, and even some other terriers added. During the 1980s breeders felt that the Cesky Terrier changed too much from the way Horak intended for them to be, so they again crossed in Sealyham Terriers. The original purpose of Cesky Terriers was to hunt pests in their dens. Horak tired to produce a breed with a narrower head and chest and a softer coat than the other terriers at that stage. The Cesky Terriers are excellent hunters, trackers and also watch dogs.
Characteristics
The Cesky terrier is quite strong, and low to the ground. They are also longer than they are tall. These dogs are very tough little dogs, and they have lots of stamina. They are very supple and hard working, and also very keen hunting dogs. Cesky Terriers are also very graceful and enthusiastic dogs.
Temperament
The Cesky Terrier is very fond of playing, but also protective. They come across very sporty, but can also be very calm at times. These dogs are very happy dogs, and they get along very well with children.
Cesky Terriers are very courageous, and loyal to their families. These dogs are very clever, and train easier than some of the other terrier breeds. These dogs are very sociable dogs, and will get along fine with other dogs and animals. Cesky Terriers are also outstanding companion dogs, but at the same time very watchful.
Care
The Cesky terrier should be trimmed fairly often, but still leaving the on the stomach and legs long. If kept as pet dogs, these dogs will have to be trimmed about four times during the year. And if they are used as show dogs, they will require grooming more often. The hair of these dogs will also have to be brushed and combed about two times during the week; this will also prevent tangles from forming. These dogs shed very little hair, almost none. Training
Cesky Terriers are very intelligent dogs, and they do really well in obedience. They do however possess a very stubborn streak – early socialisation and obedience training are recommended for these dogs from an early age on. Training of these dogs should be conducted in a firm, fair and consistent manner.
