History

The Chow Chow's build is very similar to that of the oldest known dog remains, which dates back several million years ago. The Chow has been well known for thousands of years in China. In China these dogs were put to work as hunters, cart pullers and boat guards. It is believed that one Emperor kept 2500 Chow pairs. One was then given to the Prince of Wales. Over history, the Chow has also been used to hunt wolves, sable and pheasant – they were also used to pull sleds. The flesh of these dogs was also considered a delicacy in China many years ago – although these dogs are still eaten in China today. This gorgeous dog was first brought to England by merchants in the late 1800's.

Characteristics

The Chow Chow is a true work of art of distinction and loveliness. They possess the sole characteristic of having a blue-black tongue. They are very intelligent and they have an independent spirit. They also portray a distinguished demeanour. The Chow is extremely friendly, kind and sensitive.

Temperament

The Chow Chow is a distinguished, loyal, and independent breed. They have a serious stance and a somewhat defensive streak – this adds to the fact that they are very effective watchdogs. These dogs are attentive and bright - and it can be very difficult to get some Chow Chows to do anything that they do not want to do. This makes them more suited those with dog ownership experience and training. This breed does have defensive instincts, and needs to be socialized early on.

Care

It is important to brush their coats on a regular basis in order to maintain the standing out look they have. These dogs shed a lot, and extra care should be taken when they are shedding their dense undercoats. They can be dry shampooed when necessary. Training

The Chow Chow requires strong, extensive and ongoing training. This should be in both socialization and obedience areas. It is relatively easy to housebreak these dogs. They will only however perform tasks that make sense to them. They need to be taught from an early age onwards who the master is, otherwise they will take control. They require firmness, justice, and consistency as part of their training. They do not respond to harshness or rough training methods, and will become aggressive if treated in a rude way. The Chow is very talented as a watchdog or guard dog.
