History

For centuries the Rough Coated Collie was barely known external to Scotland. It is now one of the world's most well-liked breeds. Descended from generations of hard- working herding dogs, it is a meticulous creature of vast intelligence. They are used as water rescue dogs and have served man as sheepdogs for centuries – as well as guarding and herding flocks. The breed's name almost certainly comes from its charge - the Scottish black-faced sheep called the Colley. Early on Rough Collies were smaller, with broader heads and shorter muzzles. The Collie is so very intelligent, and they have been trained for many purposes including rescue dogs, guides for the blind, movie stars and also as guard dogs.

Characteristics

Temperament

Collies are very dignified and highly intelligent dogs. They are very sensitive, sweet, kind and easy to train. They usually get along quite well with other pets. These dogs are also very devoted to and also very caring of their loved ones. There is a story of one Collie that travelled 2000 miles to find his family after he became lost. They can be very stubborn, and must be trained gently – or they will refuse to oblige.

Care

Their stunning coats shed dirt easily, and a thorough weekly brushing will keep it in superior condition. Extra care should be taken when the soft undercoat is being shed. The Smooth variety of these dogs has a one-inch, and this should be brushed every one to two weeks. These dogs can be bathed or dry shampooed when it is necessary. Collies shed quite heavily twice a year. For more detailed info, take a look at the Collie Grooming page.
