History

The Coton De Tulear is originally from Madagascar where they were developed during the 20th century. These dogs are still fairly rare in the United States, and it is believed that there are only about 5000 of them in total. Wealthy residents of the region Tuleur, in Madagascar favoured these dogs as companions for many centuries. Today they still breed these dogs there.

Characteristics

The Coton de Tulear is a very flexible and energetic companion dog. They flourish on being an important part of the family, and they do not like to be left alone for extended periods of time. These dogs are very content to just sit on your lap or next to your feet – they are also very fond of playing.

Temperament

Coton De Tulears are extremely friendly and loving dogs. These dogs are very sociable, and in general they get along well with children. This breed is very attached to their owners and families, and always wants to be in close vicinity to them. The Coton De Tulear is a very good watch dog. These dogs are known for jumping and walking on their back legs. Coton De Tulears learn very quickly, but they do have a tendency to be obstinate at times.

Care

These dogs are very high maintenance when it comes to their grooming needs – their long coats should be brushed on a daily basis. The dead hair in their coats should be combed out, and the excess hair between their pads and ears removed. These dogs should only be bathed once or twice during the year, unless otherwise necessary. The Coton De Tulear does not shed a lot of hair, and will therefore be well suited to someone suffering from allergies. For more detailed info, take a look at the Coton De Tulear Grooming page.

Training

The Coton de Tulear is a very bright and clever dog – but they are fairly slow to mature. These dogs are difficult to housebreak, and crate training is recommended. They will benefit from early socialisation and obedience training, and will do well if it’s conducted in a firm, patient and consistant manner.
