History

Curly-Coated Retrievers are considered to be one of the oldest retriever breeds. They have been used for retrieving since the 18th century in England. These dogs were also developed here. The breed probably came about from crosses with the Close-Curled English Water Dog, the Old Water Spaniel and the St. John's Newfoundland dog. Some people believe it to be the Irish Water Spaniel, the Labrador, and the Poodle. Curlys are very fine water retrievers with gentle mouths, which is particularly good for duck and quail.

Characteristics

This is a breed of bravery, persistence and grace. The Curly Coated Retriever has a strong field capability. They are strong, well-built and balanced dogs. Curly Coated Retrievers are self-confident and stylish show, hunting, and companion dogs.

Temperament

Being intelligent, sociable and loving dogs the Curly coated Retriever has plenty of endurance. They are unwavering and loveable dogs that are well suited to inexperienced dog owners as well as the more experienced ones. It is significant to mix the Curly coated Retriever with other dogs early on in order to help him develop in terms of confidence. This is a breed that needs ample exercise, contact, and awareness. Curly coated Retrievers are affectionate and faithful dogs and this makes them excellent companions and pet.

Care

Curlys are very average shedding dogs. The curly hair of the Curly-Coated Retriever is relatively easy to care for. They should be washed, but brushing and combing the coat will make the coat frizzed. Make sure to wet the coat after grooming to recommence the curls. Some cutting may be good to clean up the curly hairs. These dogs do need regular brushing, especially during the shedding seasons. Training

Curly Coated Retrievers are a very sensitive breed of dogs. They are independent, and do have an inclination to be obstinate. Early socialization and obedience training are very important for these dogs. It is important that the training sessions for these dogs are short and mixed, seeing that they can become bored quite effortlessly. Curlys do not respond well to harsh or rough methods of training. Training must be done with firmness, equality and constancy.
