History

This breed has a relatively new origin. They were developed in Germany during the 1860's. This was probably done by crossing German Pinschers with Rottweilers, Beauceron, Pinschers, Greyhounds and English Greyhounds – which resulted in the smooth and highly clever Doberman pinscher. The maker of this mixture was a German tax collector named Louis Dobermann. Dobermann had to travel often through bandit-infested areas, and decided to build a watchdog and a bodyguard able of handling any situation that might occur. Carrying the name of its inventor, the Doberman was first presented at a dog show in 1876. It was a big success straight away.

Characteristics

These dogs are well-built, stylish, and graceful. Doberman Pinschers are medium to large in size. These breeds of dogs are brave, ingenious, daring and very bright. They are one of the most appreciated and well-liked dog breeds that there is. Doberman Pinschers are also known for their deep loyalty and defensive nature.

Temperament

Being proud, dignified and attentive, the Doberman pinscher is a dog with a lot of affection and love to give. These obedient dogs tend to have a still, well balanced nature and are also very intelligent. They also are very creative and quick to learn. The Doberman pinscher excels in obedience training, especially when it is positive, and it includes treats and lots of praise. Doberman pinschers are one of the most intelligent and best learning of all breeds. These dogs are best matched to those who can ascertain themselves as boss from day one. These dogs can be very strong willed and obstinate. These dogs definitely do not like to be teased or treated roughly. It is important to ensure that you give your Doberman pinscher plenty of physical and mental encouragement. Failure in doing so may result them in becoming bored and restless – and this can result in behavioural issues.

Care

The grooming requirements for the Doberman pinscher are not very high. All that is required to keep the coat looking fine is a brushing ever so often. A damp cloth can also be used occasionally to keep the short hair looking shiny and conditioned. These dogs are not very high shedders, but can shed more heavily during certain seasons. Training

Doberman pinschers are not that hard to train, but will do best with a dominant owner. Early socialization and obedience are of extreme importance to prevent shyness, nervousness and aggressive behaviour. Dobermans will not respond well to harsh or rough methods. This breed does best with constructive reinforcement, firmness, fairness, consistency, and admiration. The Doberman pinscher excels in competitive obedience training. Tracking, search and rescue work, police work are all areas that they can be used in successfully.
