What Causes Dog Anal Inflammation and Infections?
This condition can be a very tricky one for vets, the reason I say this is because the cause for the peri-anal fistulas is not know and thus neither is a perfect cure.
This condition happens and can be seen when small holes (fistulas) or a single hole form around the anus area, these holes may be inflamed or not inflamed and reach into the tissue around the anus and then possibly branch out into further tunnels/holes.
The reason these holes are so painful for the dog is because there will be a lot of inflammation within the anus, and when feces is passed through, the anus will be in a constant tensed and un relaxed state because of the sever pain the dog will be feeling to pass feces and after holding it or as long as possible. This often creates long thin lines of feces instead of solid normal looking feces.
What Your Vet May Say or Do
There is no confirmed treatment for peri-anal fistulas as yet so it is a hard diagnosis for a vet to make. Many medications have been tried and many different surgical efforts have been made, but with no constant success rate it is very much down to the vet in question to decide on the appropriate cure.
For medication your vet may use a variety of treatments to suppress the immune system, as well as antibiotics, cortisone and cyclosporin.
If your vet chooses a surgical option then they may try cleaning out the inside of the fistulas, remove the fistulas completely, or cut off the anus and effected part and then recreate the anus in the hope of curing the problem.
There treatments are not certainties though and a specialist centre may need to be contacted to find the most up to date methods, but even then the condition may return to the previous state.
