How about getting a book about cockers, maybe in the library, that has one with pictures in it of the style. Otherwise you'll have to buy a grooming book but that will have lots of breeds in it. Also you do have to know about the different blades that you can use to get the desired length. Most cockers I clip are with a Oster or Andis no 7F blade for the body and a no10 for the head, neck and 1/4 of the ears. then you have to have thinning scissors for blending and good quality scissors for trimming the feathering.
You could take a short course at one of the colleges of course. They often do training for a day for owners and they will show you how.
