Default Liver Problems

Giday

Just had my second dog diagnosed with liver problems. About 3-4 months ago both my dogs sicked up. One we thought came ok, the other we took to the vet. The diagnosis was Kennel Cough, which now looks like it was incorrect.

The second dog seemed ok but when we took him to be desexed at about 8 months of age the vet would not do the operation. Tests were done and it was found he had liver problems. He went rapidly down hill and had to be put down about 2 weeks later. His liver completely shut down.

The other dog we took to the vet seemed to come ok except she was off her food, sicked up accasionally (once every 10 to 12 days) and lost condition. She didn't seem to loose weight but her ribs started showing etc.

She has been back to the vet a few times and nothing really concrete was found untill the day before yesterday and now we believe she has a liver problem. It's not as bad as our other dog but it's not real good.

What we believe has happened is that they have eaten something probably seeds from a Cyclad plant. There are some mushrooms in our front garden which also could be the culprit but the Vet is leaning towards the cyclad theory.

I suppose my question is, is there any hope? I had been looking through the net and found instances where dog's have come back from near death with liver problems by changing their diet to something more natural, giving them milk thistle and vitame E along with a multivitamin capsule.

Will this help? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tony

Hi,
I'm not a vet or expert so i'm afraid i cannot help much. But i do know that givng a dog human vitamins which contain iron can hurt the dogs stomach lining and also can affect the liver.
I wouldn't try anything new without talking to your vet first as they generally do know best.
I am sorry to hear about your dogs problems though. My oldest has heart disease and i would do anything to make him better. But all we can do is give him the tablets (which cost nearly £100 a month) which we get from the vets.

I am really sorry to hear about your dogs, speak to your vet about the food you give them and the vitamins u mentioned i wouldn't reccomend it as like princess said they can do more harm than good.

What kind of liver problems are common in dogs... is there a pretty wide selection of them?
