My Staff is suffering from a case of really bad breath! She smells like she has been eating wrotten old fish. We feed her on a dry food mix which is supposed to be Beef or chicken so she has not had any fish. Anyone know whether this could be an underlying health issue or just dog's bad breath! We give her a dentastik each night to try to keep tartar under control and her teeth all look healthy.

The normal reason for bad breath is build up of plaque on the teeth and inflammation of the gums known as gingivitis. However, another reason for rancid smelling breath is kidney disease (hope I haven't just scared you!). I rescued an elderly springer spaniel who had chronic kidney failure and her breath smelled like something had died in her mouth! It is caused by a build up of toxins as the kidneys are unable to function properly. If you say that her teeth look ok, it may be worth taking her to your vet to have her checked over, just to be on the safe side. Hope this has been helpful, let us know how she is getting on.

Glad to report that the bad breath has gone, it seems she had upset stomach for couple of days which has also passed and the bad breath gone with it. The bad breath was just the beginning of the upset stomache!
Thanks again. Trina |
