I susepect that rice may be something my poodle is allergic to and wonder if there would be much of a difference if she had barley instead. Which is better to look for in dog food, rice or barley?

I suppose it could be an allergy, but I know a lot of the dog food out there do appear to contain rice, but there also seems to be quite a few sensitive options in ranges such as Arden Grange and Eukanuba, I don't know what exactly is in these foods but it might well be worth a look to see if they are suitable?
Also, have you spoken to your vets? They should have more of an idea as to if they think it is an allergy and they should also be able to advise which foods may be suitable. Hope you manage to get sorted out. ![]() |

Be aware that most JW varieties contain rice, though they also do a grain free variety that uses potato as its energy source. Lamb, Turkey and Fish Cereal Free is what you're looking for.
How are things currently? Avoid any grain ingredients in the food. Nick

Funny logic. My dog's favourite food might be pizza, but he won't be getting that every day!

Of course you should absolutely avoid feeding your dog any brand dog food that contains rice if she is allergic to this grain. Nowadays pet owners have so many options when it comes to feeding their dog. They even have vegan food! See which of the rice free brands agrees with her.

Hi friends...,
In order for a dog food to be marketed as “complete and balanced”, it must meet the nutritional standards established by AAFCO. These nutritional adequacy standards are defined by two nutrient profiles based upon a dog’s stage of life… * Adult maintenance * Growth and reproduction In order for any dog food company to claim a product is “complete and balanced” for a specific life stage, that claim must first have been validated in one of two ways… * Laboratory analysis only * Laboratory analysis plus actual feeding trials ____________________________________ |

My boy suffered from the same problem for about 3 months.
I was back and fourth to the vets but nothing was working. So i did a little bit of reasearch and found a website that sold Harveys Choice Hypoallegenic dog food. Spoke to the very helpful people in customer service who put me onto there fish and potato food that has an ingredient for allergies. I now have a very happy healthy dog, problem all cleared up. Hope this helps |
