Dog

Hi Nick,
We were actually looking for a better brand of food for Princess and Tash. We saw one for £15 and it was only a normal sized bag (same sized bag in chappie was £3!) so i wasn't to sure. But is it true that because its so nutrisious we don't need to give them as much? And would we have to stick to that food once we started them on it?

Yes, better brands require less to be given, and it can take the dog a while to get used to less in front of them. Look to find a brand in the brands I suggest.

Try to keep the dog on the brand yes, though dogs needs change as they age (just like ours) so you may need to go to senior types later on.

Coincidentally, I was looking at this site today and became quite excited by the good work they are embarking upon: Campaign for Real Pet Food I shall be endorsing that site soon.

HTH,

Nick

Thank you for your reply.
Ruby is on bakers senior but we won't be changing his food as he is 15 and used to bakers.
But Princess and Tash are both only 2 so a good age i think to get them on a good food.
I'll definatly be looking into changing their food.

What breed is Ruby? I would say get him off the Bakers...it is my public enemy number one. Make dietary changes gradual (over 2 weeks say for an older dog). Older dogs (just like older people!) do benefit from health improvements...diet included.

Good for you for being aware and thinking about your dog's health!

thank you for the advice Nick I read the piece you put on there and reading what is in the food is gross....
I have upon reading it decided to stick with J.W, tbh I was told it was a better food with more meat in it, but you have obviously read up on it and noticed what i never thought to ask so for that thank you.

Hi,
He is a Lab. I hadn't thought of it like that. I was just thinking he has been on it for so long it wouldn't be good for is tummy if we changed his food. Is there a brand you recommend for older dogs? He is overweight, has heart disease so can't go on long walks and he is very slow with weak back legs.

Discuss with vet if uncertain, but a senior variety like James Wellbeloved or a Burns type should be fine. Look at their web sites. Normalising weight would be beneficial.

Make changes gradual as I say.
