Default help, unable to walk my yorkshire terrier.

hi folks,
i have a Yorkshire terrier honey who is 2 years old. she is a good dog . she follows commands toilet trained great, she loves playing with my two children but i just cant walk her. Every time i take her out weather it be on my own or with my children she does nothing but scream, cry and bark. everyone thinks i am killing her as i walk down the street its embarrassing. therefore she doesn't get walked regularly. what can i do to stop this and walk her quietly and regularly. any help, tips or advice would be greatly appreciated as i would really like to walk her.

thanks kerry.

Sounds an awful situation your in! If i were you i'd try walking your dog but stopping every time she barks, if she carries on barking dont reward her with the walk she wants and just stay put until she begins to learn not to bark.

If she stops barking then walk her again, she might think she's the boss at the moment and you need to show her different. that's the only thing i can think of at the moment that you can try i'm afraid. hope it helps. worth a try at least!

sorry i cant help further and good luck!

Hi,
What leash are you using as a starter? Have you tried her with a harness as she might not like a collar. Also, how does she react when you get the leash out?

Oh dear!

What age have you had this dog from?

How long has been doing this?

How long have you been avoiding going out for?

Is she generally a nervous type?

Any health concerns?

What do you feed her?

Sorry a few questions to start with.

Thanks

Nick

hi natalie thanks for your suggestions i will try that,,

hi princess, shes fine with her collar or a harness on, ive tried both, she gets very excited when her lead comes out

hi nick,
weve had honey since 6/7 weeks old i think,
she's done this everytime weve walked her,
weve avoided walking her for a while, its just too stressful and embarrassing,
she constantly barks, and runs barking at anyone she see's ,
she is quite a nervous dog she often shakes for no apparent reason,
we feed her dry food mainly, but occasionaly she'll have cat food
she wont really eat dog meat,

no problems nick ask away, im just desperate to have a normal dog and walk her daily, when she's on the lead she constantly looks at you to make sure your still with her, if the kids run off or we split as a family she goes mad and barks constantly, its as if we all have to stay near her

kind regards for replying,
kerry.

Do you have a good local trainer to hand?

The reason I'm asking this is that I suspect there are a multitude of areas that require addressing.

This would start in the home in detail, and then gradually address the outside situation. So, a case of rebuilding from the ground up I think.

Prevent access to cat food please. What brand is she on usually?

Nick

Hi,
Just to let you know that cat food isn't very good for dogs as it has different nutrition and can be a bit to much for dogs.
Nick seems very good so hopefully he can help you

Hi,
I'm thinking Chappie as it has quite a fishy smell to it and might be the closest thing to the cat food taste?
Do you mix in the wet and dry? As that might be worth a try, just keep a fork aside for dog food.
