Default pouncing on other dogs.

Hi all,
My 2 year old akita bitch (spayed) is wonderful with people but has issues with other animals, particularly other dogs.
On seeing a dog approaching she drops to her belly and 'stalks' the other dog in the way that a lion would stalk their pray. On encountering the other dog she will let it sniff her for about 15 seconds before she tries to pounce on it by placing her front paws over the dogs back/neck. I understand this is a dominance position?
At a previous training class another dog (off lead) came running towards Sashi (on lead), growling and teeth glaring and jumped at Sashi, who in turn bit the other dog. It was a very small nip effectively but since then Sashi has been more aggressive around black or darker coloured dogs (the dog from the training class was a black crossbreed). Apart from that incident Sashi has had no other negative encounters with dogs.
can anyone explain this pouncing behaviour please?
Thanks
Sarah

I can't really comment on her behaviour you describe without seeing it myself.

The dog lying down thing can be seen either as a calming signal (I mean you no harm) or a hunt type behaviour. Can you post us a video clip to Youtube or something like that. No mobile phone footage pls as it tends to be unwatchable!

In any event, you need to be close enough to your dog to interrupt any behaviour that leaves you feeling concerned, or another owner may complain about. Your dog's weight will tend to change the dynamics in her favour.

A long line can help you by being able to step on it and then control her.

HTH,

Nick
