Firstly, IMO it's far too early. 10-12 months is more like it.

Secondly, it often doesn't have the effect people are seeking. I've had many a conversation where people say the behaviour got WORSE post castration!

Excessive behaviour indicates a lack of training or control, so focus on that.

Is this your first collie? They are high energy usually and require plenty of input. 'Robdactive' has one at least and should be able to offer some thoughts

its the barking at other dogs and people thats the problem everything else is going well, he is being socialised alot with dogs and people, we have tried alot of things, distracting with treats, toys, walking the other way ect, but nothing seems to be working, he seems to be really fixed on the dog when he goes off on one!

I really think that castration is a big red herring for the behaviour you describe.
Keep working on the areas you're currently working upon and all should be well.

I did speak to a lady for you some time back who said she knew someone good in your area. I would look upon specific training for this sort of behaviour as a good investment. Shall I get her details again?
