Hi! Im new to this, I've signed up as I've just had a pup from a rescue home, 10 weeks now, collie cross, really lovely and gentle nature. And very bright! Taught 'sit' and 'come' in a day... So why won't he understand the toilet rules!! He sleeps in a crate at night, and we put him outside every morning, bit after he's eaten or had a bout of being hyper or taken a long nap!! He seemed to be getting the idea but last few days, even if you're outside with him, he will run in to go to the toilet! There is newspaper down also which he rarely uses and he insists on peeing and pooping elsewhere. We havent given him a row when he's made a mess, just pick him up and put him outside but he seems to be getting worse. Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated!!! :-)

Personally, if possible I would remove the toilet paper as this is probably encouraging him to go there.
Keep doing what you are doing and make sure he is rewarded each time he successfully toilets outside. Not just praise but a treat or toy/game too as this is likely a stronger reinforcer to him than just verbal rewards. Also assume he needs to go at least every half hour - and watch for any body language signals that give a hint like extra sniffing of the floor or a tail lift. Congrats on your new addition!!! Let us know how you are getting on with him. (Puppy updates always appreciated here!!) ![]() |
