Default nervous rescue border collie

Hi
yesterday we acquired an 8 month border collie who is lovely. She loves everyone in the family apart from me - the only man in the house. I was warned she was nervous around men.

She is clearly scared. She barks and growls at me but if I approach her (with someone else holding her coller or lead) she rolls on her back in submission and almost shakes with fear. It's quite sad to see.

I am taking her for walks and she quickly settles. She is fine when out but then when we are back in the house she returns to being scared of me mode. I am trying to be the person that gives her treats and I use lots of praise.

Is there anything else I could be doing? (I know this is going to be a long process)

Someone suggested that the sooner we let her off the lead the better (we live near some massive grass areas) and that this would help - we are worried though, only 24 hours in, that she may not come back.

Any advice would be very very welcome.

Thanks

Rob

Sounds like you're doing the right things!I wouldn't let her off lead until you are sure of her recall though, maybe practice using a long line?I had the same problem with Flow when we first got her,it was a matter of time and patience for her to get used to my husband, although she remained generally nervous until I discovered agility,so this could be helpful when your young lady is a bit older.Good luck!

Hiya.

I would keep her on a long training line for a week or two and reassure yourself that there is a reliable recall before letting her off.

Yes, feed her, walk her, be the one to give toilet access. Train her using her food. Try not to be too anxious about 'making friends' with her. Relax, it'll come. Make yourself really important to her and she'll love you for that no doubt.

Avoid leaning over her much and making her feel excessively submissive or fearful.

Good luck.
