Default timid black lab

Hi, This is my first post, its a bit of a essay.
We have just adopted a 9 mth female black lab called Tia . The previous owners had the mum and kept one of the pups Tia. However they then found they could not cope with 2 dogs and 4 kids and needed to rehome Tia. So she has come from a loving home. The problem is she has done everything with mum in tow and now she is one her own, the world is a scary place and she is quite timid and nervous with people and places.
She has accepted me and my husband but is wary of our son who is 21 and at college all day. We have been doing the ignoring and avoiding eye contact thing
and she is slowly coming to him. With other people the tail goes down and she cowers and sometimes barks.
When on the lead she walks to the end of the road and then stops and lies down and refuses to go any further. I have tried crossing the road and going in the other direction but she just wants to go home. To give her a good walk I have to put her in the car and drive to the heath. Luckily she likes the car.
I know she needs to be socialised which we are trying to do, but what I want to know is:
Would it be a good idea to take her to training classes, we have been recommended to one and also should we take her now, we have had her for 4 days! or wait until she is more used to us.

She responds to commands and is fine at home, we have had a few accidents but I think this due to a change in home etc.
Any help would be very welcome, we have had dogs before.
thanks

She is a young dog and she has had some big changes in her life, so it's understandable that she is wary.

You however must not re-enforce her nervous behaviour. Take her to training classes, a good trainer will be able to advise you on the best course of action to bring your dog out of her shell.

thanks for replying, sorry for the delay, we have spoken to a good trainer who does a class for nervous dogs called shy guys, so will let you know.
Our vet has also suggested DAP spray and infuser
