I always get a good sniff-over from my two (especially my border terrier) as I work with dogs and they like to see what/who I've been seeing...they sense unfaithfulness
If you find it rude and too pushy, then encourage them to sit before you so much as interact. This will show them a new way of greeting which is less forceful and much more polite.
