Rainbow To rescue or not?

Hey,
Wondering what everyone feels about rescuing dog or if you prefer to get them fom puppys.
Getting a dog from apuppy may not be for everyone, as they need training vacciations and all sorts.
We got Rubuen as a rescue dog, he came into the vets where my mum worked, he was badly beaten, scared of anyone and was very very skinny but now he's turned around and if a lovable do who is afraid (and is such a fatty!)
Priness we got when she was about a year old, got her from a friend who's dog had had pups so we went to go lok at the, but we fell in love wth Princess who had come from the first litter. She was called puppy then so we had to get her used to a new name!
And Tash was a rescue dog we got rom the RSPCA.

I prefer to rescue dogs as i just want to help them i they can be so loveable.
But you have to make sure rescuing is for you as it can be really hard work and take a lot of time. There are also lots of older dogs that need rescuing but to many people won't as they want a younger dog, which is such a shame. The are also a lot of staffies in rescue homes.
x

If i could, i' rescue every dog! lol

Just remember that many rescue dogs are there due to behaviioural issues, and I see msany of them that are a liability.

You need to be an experienced owner, and to enter this with eyes wide open. So many people take rescue dogs home and then provide no leadership as they spoil them with love and attention, whereby what they rtesally require is of course a loving environment, but to establish rules quickly is best

Hm, i don't agree about the liability bit.
Most of them just need proper care and yes people do need to learn how to look after dogs properly but i don't think this should stop people from getting dogs, everyone has to learn somewhere and vets are good for advice and there are plenty of books, i think as long as a person WANTS to have a dog and knows they could look after it then it is okay, it doesn't mater how much experience one has. Not all dogs have problems, a lot are there becase previos owners simply couldn't be bothered to look after them or the dog was naughty in which case its the persons fault.
There are a lot of loving dogs in resce centres that just need a loving home

I hear you.

However, 80% are there due to behavioural issues. This is why I say that you need to keep your eyes open when you look and choose a rescue.

I have seen and dealt with a number of rescue dogs that are a liability and it doesn't always end happily ever after.

I applaud people that go down the rescue route...I'm just counterbalancing your rose-tinted view with my experience that all.

Hi there

just wanted to add....

I got a resuce dog back in oct and she is the sweetest tempered dog who settled in very quickly. However we are very aware that that makes us lucky !!....i would love to know her background aside from what the USPCA told us (that her previous owner was an alchoholic).

I think its a bit selfish to breed a dog for your own pleasure when so many others need a home.....

Dog

I agree sort of. I don't think its selfish to breed dogs though as some people are more suited to pups.

It could also be argued that IF dogs were only bred to order, and a vetting process was carried out with licences etc. the whole situation could be improved immensely.

Maybe unlikely, but there must be room for a massive improvement in the way things are at present!

I do believe we need some legislation to stop the needless (and poor) breeding.

Hm, not sure 'cos i do just think that people should be able to pick and chose when they want their dogs to breed. My baby girl is on a period now and she is absolutly gorgeous and i would love for her to have pups but i know myself that i couldn't properly look after the pups so therefore i won't be letting her.

I agree with both points, but think people should have there choice whether they would like a rescue dog or a puppy, the priority should be whether that person is able to give the dog a loving stable home and that the dog/puppy is right for the owner, the owner should research the breed they would like and see if it is right for them. i do say once again the priority is that the dog/ puppy and owner are happy and right with each other.

I do agree Mac. I just think that people should be encouraged to rescue dogs as well.
