Default Hello from an inexperienced puppy owner

Hi there, we have a georgeous new springer Spaniel puppy, Charlie.
He is just 10 weeks old and has been with us for 2 weeks now. He is settling down well and is a happy, lively boy. As a 'puppy novice' I really appreciate as much advice as possible. Naturally I'd like him to be well behaved, and well looked after.
I knew it would be tough, but, phew, what hard work! Charlie is running us ragged.(lol.) He is so lively, everything is a game!!! He responds to his name, accepts that his crate is where he must sleep, realises that the garden is the place to 'poo', and happily retrieves a toy for us to play with him. Yes, he is doing so well, but he refuses to wear a collar. Since his second jab is next week, I want to get him used to collar and lead, ready for him to learn some discipline ready for when we take him out. He snarled and fought like crazy when we placed puppy collar on him. Then he sulked and scratched wildly at the collar until it frayed, and we had to remove it to prevent him swallowing the frayed edges! Does anyone know,is it too soon to be introducing collar and lead? Surely it is never too early to begin teaching simple commands? Yet Charlie is way too boisterous to obey. We will be taking him to training classes, but are unsure whether he is too young and boisterous.
All advice greatfully recieved xx
