Puppy coming into season

We were supposed to get our puppy spayed although when we visited the vets she said that we may have to wait a little as she was swollen and looked like she was coming into season. So it seems we may have to wait. I just wondered if there were any symptoms i should be aware of or whether this affects the dog's behaviour etc. Strange question, but we were hoping to get her spayed earlier.
