Default New puppy! The chaos begins!

Hi. I'm new to the forum and am hoping for advice on toilet training and crying at night.

We picked up our 10 week old pup 2 days ago. We live in a 1st floor flat so cannot do the regular toilet training. We are using puppy pads, sometimes she'll use them and sometimes not,we still have 4 weeks before we can take her outside and then establish the routine we have for our 2 year old staffie, which works well for him. Any advice on how to continue with indoor toilet training would be really useful as I'm sure there are dog owners who have been in a similar situation. Also having issues with crying at night. She is in a crate and has a puppy pad in there with her-one half of the crate is bed and the other half toilet. Also being in a flat leaving her to cry would upset our neighbours. I do go into the kitchen(without speaking or putting on any lights) and tell her 'shht'. She will eventually be quiet after a couple of minutes but will become unsettled again,I lost count of the times I got up to quiet her last night-any ideas please?

It seems the original poster has left the building! Such a shame as I am in the same situation as s/he was i.e. first floor flat and no access to communal gardens for puppy until jabs finished. I've been struggling with the indoor toilet training issues. I do know how s/he feels regarding the worry about neighbours and noise but I guess I've been lucky. I slept in the same room as my puppy for only his first two nights, played with him the first night when he woke, ignored him the second night and he went back to sleep in 10 mins and since then I've been going to my own bedroom and he is in his own large crate with separate sleeping and toilet areas in another room and there isn't a peep out of him. Also, as far as I'm aware (via the neighbours) he doesn't cry when I go out in the day, though this is only for a couple of hours at the most. As with many things I think it's a mix of genes + environment - he is a Lhasa Apso and I read that so long as they are not made into "lap dogs" they tend to be fairly independant and don't suffer much from separation anxiety.
Don't know really if I should have resurrected this post - apologies if I shouldn't, but would be interested to hear from other flat + dog owners.
