Dog Heart Problems Causing Seizures Symptoms

1. Dog may faint which is commonly confused with a seizure.

2. Mild muscle twitching.

3. May seem disorientated and confused when they awake from fainting.

What Causes Dog Heart Problems Causing Seizures?

The cause for fainting in dogs is commonly because of a heart problem within the dog, if this is the case then it is possible that the blood will not be being pumped around the body as much as is needed, particularly during exercise when the body will need more oxygen from the blood. As this lack of oxygen happens it deprives the brain and makes it temporarily shut down (faint) until there is enough oxygen from the blood again and it is well enough to continue. The dog may then be slightly confused for a short period of time while everything returns to normal.

The key difference between fainting and seizures (which are easily mistaken for each other) is that fainting will normally only happen when a high heart rate has occurred because the dog was doing activities, epileptic seizures will happen at a much more relaxed time.

What Your Vet May Say or Do

The vet when presented with this problem will run all the regular tests on the dog which will show if in fact the dog has had a seizure or has just fainted and it will show if there are heart problems present. When this has been determined the appropriate process for the heart problem will be executed depending on the test results.
