What Causes Dog Hyperparathyroidism (Overactive Parathyroid Glands)?

This condition is a very rare one and is not often found in dogs, it s caused by four small parathyroid glands situated at the front of the neck associated with the thyroid glands. These thyroid glands are found either side of the dog's windpipe (trachea) and have two of the smaller parathyroid glands beside them.

The job of the parathyroid glands is to control and maintain the levels of calcium in the dog's body and bloodstream. If however one of these glands becomes enlarged the calcium levels become more and more letting too much calcium into the blood. As this happens the body will try to deposit of this calcium through the body's tissue turning it over time into bone making parts of the body harder to function.

What Your Vet May Say or Do

This condition will be confirmed by the vet by taking specialised blood tests and ultra scans to look at the state of the parathyroid glands, and then following up with the surgical removal of the affected gland leaving the dog's symptoms to get better and then disappear to its normal functions.
