Dog Kidney Problems Causing Seizures (renal encephalopathy) Symptoms
1. Recurring grand mal seizures or petit mal seizures.
2. Other symptoms depend on the underlying problem with the body's organs.
What Causes Dog Kidney Problems Causing Seizures (renal encephalopathy)?
To explain the cause of this condition we must first look at one of the vital functions of the kidneys. The kidneys is much like the liver and one of the functions are to get rid or detoxify the toxins and chemicals that the other organs in the dog produce, without this function of the kidneys then dangerous chemicals and toxins that are normally only in small quantities are now released in larger more influential amounts into the body.
The larger amounts of chemicals then cause the brain to work unusually and in a way that the body cannot handle, this then triggers the defence system of the dogs body which causes a seizure as a means of correcting the body's errors, this is why the dog may seem unaffected after a seizure.
The only way to combat this condition therefore is to treat the symptoms of the underlying problem that is affecting the dog's kidneys and thus clearing the influential toxin amounts that are causing the brain not to work correctly and making the seizures happen.
What Your Vet May Say or Do
If the vet suspects this condition there will be many test including blood tests, x-rays and ultrasound scans. These will then give the vet an idea of the underlying problem within the body that is making the kidneys not work properly and this will then be treated before normality can continue for the dog in question.
There are many different causes and cases so as with many seizure related conditions the underlying problem should be proved and solved first by the vet or professionally advised by the vet.
